From project conception to construction
Every project has its architectural and constructions challenges.  Vlachos Engineering is experienced in developing cost-effective structural engineering solutions, while striving to maintain the functionality and the aesthetics of the Architect’s vision.

Our priority is to provide our clients with professional, courteous services, ensuring that projects are executed expeditiously with quick responses and a high level of communication and coordination with the many other diciplines (mechanical, plumbing, electrical, etc.)

Luxury Home with "Bell" Shaped Roof Arch: Landry Design Group

CHALLENGE - Bell Shaped Roof Section with Vaulted Ceilings
The Architect incorporated "bell" shaped roof sections over a circular room with a vaulted ceiling that looked up into the inside of the "bell". A steel beam system would be too expensive, therefore an alternative, cost-effective structural engineering solution was needed.

SOLUTION
Manny Vlachos designed a low-cost solution using a built-up plywood box beam, cut wedge with bolts, compression block. A tension ring was designed using an inexpensive coil strap with overlapping holes that were lined up and bolted.

CHALLENGE - Large Home Gym on Upper-Level
The upper-level, home gym was originally designed with heavier framing than the rest of the house to account for the weight of the equipment. During construction, the equipment was finalized, and ended up weighing significantlly more - equivalent to several cars.

SOLUTION
Manny Vlachos reviewed the new calculations prior to the installation of the floor joists, and redesigned the floor using a series of beams rather than joists.

Beach Home in Ventura County Arch: ARC Design Group

Picture
CHALLENGE - Wind & Wave Forces
A beach house located on the oceanfront presents special challenges in order to maximize views while still have strength to resist maximum wave and wind forces.

SOLUTION
Manny Vlachos designed a concrete driven pile foundation system, supporting a concrete first floor structural slab. The ocean view windows resist wind and seismic forces using a steel moment frame. The garage walls use special blow out connections to relieve pressure during a maximum wave event.

CHALLENGE - Unusual Framing
Long, narrow homes are usually constructed with a steel moment frame, however in the Architect designed this home with the upstair's wall not matching up with the downstair's wall.

SOLUTION
Manny Vlachos designed two seperate frames, offset by 2 feet, while transferring the seismic force of the upstairs frame through the floor diaphragm. A series of steel tabs were installed from beam flange to beam flange to acheive this shear tranfer.
